I ran out of the Jamaican purple Gracilaria Sea Moss species, so I decided to try this purple Chondrus Crispus Irish Moss species from Peru. The purple colour comes from an antioxidant called anthocyanin. This antioxidant protects the plant from sunlight damage, cold temperatures, and other stressors. I love that when we eat food with this purple colour, we in turn receive the same results.
DIFFERENCE between Gold & Purple Sea moss: The gold has very mild taste, is higher in vitamin D (because it is dried out in the sun) and is a lighter cleanse. Gold sea moss is an easy to start with if you are new to sea moss however, using the gold sea moss is a slower process of healing if you want to remove any ailments.
Purple sea moss has a stronger sea taste and smell and you really need to wash it with key limes (tiny limes with lots of seeds). It is higher in antioxidants because of the high levels of anthocyanin present. This is why it **detoxes you faster and is higher in iron and other minerals. **A major reason Purple Sea moss is used for healing, cleansing, and removing parasites is because of the high levels of L-Lysine found in the purple sea moss. L-Lysine is an amino acid that's significant in supporting the immune system.
2 MAIN TYPES: The two main types of nutritional seaweeds are Chondrus Crispus and Genus Gracilaria. This Customer was raised on the Genus Gracilaria so that is naturally my preference but I was not disappointed by the Chondrus Crispus genus. Both seaweeds, Sea Moss and Irish moss are known as red algae. They are rich in proteins that create collagen in the body. Collagen is linked to joint and bone health, healthy skin, and heart health.
SEA MOSS: This is a more fine, stringy, stick-like seaweed. It has a scientific name, Gracilaria, and grows in more tropical climates such as Southern Asia, the Caribbean, and Southern Africa.
People get confused between sea moss and Irish moss. For example, Irish immigrants in Jamaica use Jamaican purple sea moss (Gracilaria) and called it Irish Moss, leading to the terms being used interchangeably. The species Gracilaria can be purple or golden. Gracilaria species grow year-round on rocks and is farmed on ropes in the ocean, making it abundant and widely available and widely consumed.
IRISH MOSS: This is scientifically known as **Chondrus Crispus. This is the product I purchased from Alkaline Inner Healing. It is a seaweed with flat, fan-like leaves. The leaves are dark purple, but some people bleach them in the sun which gives it a gold color.
People living in Ireland were the first to highlight Irish Moss's use during the Irish potato famine of 1845-1849. During this time, most people were starving and had no food. They turned to the ocean and found Chondrus Crispus, also known as Irish Moss. This sea vegetable greatly helped them survive.
FINALLY: Sea moss and Irish moss are different species of seaweed, and they are also different in terms of appearance, availability, and smell. Additionally, Sea Moss sourced from the ocean has more nutritional value than pool-farmed sea moss. Both Sea Moss and Irish moss provide the same nutritional benefits when you consume them. So, if you are unsure which one to choose, consume both and then determine which works well for you.
Both Sea Moss and Irish Moss are classified as super food because of their mineral-rich, life-enhancing nutrients. They contain 92 minerals out of the 102 needed for the body to function at optimum well-being. They are naturally potent sources of calcium, magnesium, iron, B vitamins, amino acids, minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants.
Chondrus Crispus has been a revelation for both my journeys in weight management and thyroid health. This product has helped balance and support a healthy thyroid function, aiding in the regulation of metabolism as I've experienced a gradual weight loss while noticing positive effects on my thyroid function, slowly eliminating the thyroid pills I take every morning. A fantastic choice for those seeking a natural and effective way to support their weight loss goals and thyroid health within the framework of an Alkaline lifestyle.
